Today I am featuring good friend and talented Midlands based illustrator and designer, Stina Jones of ‘Daily Doodle’ fame.
West Midlands, UK
Tell us about who you are and what you do?
I’m a freelance illustrator, graphic designer and doodler. I also run a small design agency called Creative Elements, which I set up in 2007 to collaborate with other freelancers and offer a more comprehensive range of web and print design services.
What current projects are you working on?
I’m currently working on some illustrated wedding stationery for my sister’s big day, plus a hand made piece for an upcoming group charity exhibition in Bristol later this year. I also have a few projects on the go with Creative Elements, including a website design for iMutual.co.uk and a new brand identity for a Staffordshire based marketing agency.
What piece of work or project are you most proud of?
That would have to be my Daily Doodle project from 2010/11, which taught me so much more than I’d imagined it would. The aim of the project was to create 365 hand drawn “Daily Doodles” over the space of a year, to raise funds for the charity Shelter through donations and art sales, while giving me the opportunity to experiment and develop my style.
Despite having to take a few breaks due to personal life and work commitments, the project was completed and became a bigger success than I ever could have hoped for. I didn’t imagine the word spreading much further than the networks of a few friends on Facebook – yet over 18 months on, the project is still receiving donations and gaining new followers every day! It’s very humbling.
This is always a tough question as there are so many things that inspire me! Everything from music and the arts, right through to nature and technology. Although, more often than not it’s been the people closest to me who have inspired me the most.
What are your favourite things?
My smartphone, pencil case and Adobe software subscription! Can’t imagine being without them.
When you aren’t fully occupied creating what are you doing?
Watching movies, gaming or spending time with friends and family. I enjoy the odd gig, music festival and art exhibition when I can too.
Are you trying anything new, new skills, mediums etc?
I’ve been learning more about typography recently and experimenting with font making and hand lettering. The interest was first sparked by my sister for her wedding invites, but I’ve since taken a keen interest in it as an art form and plan to create many more typographic works in the future.
What do you hope to be doing in five years time? Goals and objectives?
I’m currently enjoy a life of going with the flow so haven’t made too many concrete plans for the future. Naturally, I hope to have improved my skill, grown my business and have my work spread further afield – but above all I hope to still be enjoying what I’m doing as it’s my love of creating that makes all the hard work worth it.
Thank you Stina for a great interview..
