I decided this year to create a blog for my daughter as she has a big birthday coming up, and she was very keen to have her own blog. I decided on a free blog, that I could then customise. Having always been a WordPress girl and because I manage some free and hosted WordPress blog for friends and family. I have always felt that the extra £20 a year to garner some extra custom colours etc, was money well spent.
However, having created the blog for my daughter, imagine my consternation when I clicked on the colours customisation feature and it came up with a request for £70!! I thought, ‘this must be a mistake’, and tried again. No, it wasn’t. On further investigation, it would seem that being able to just include custom colours as a feature is no longer available. If you want to tweak your blog and make it prettier, you have to pay for a Premium package which is £70 a year, or the Business package of £210.
To be honest, having reviewed what they offer for that £70, it’s just NOT that good a deal. They don’t even offer premium themes, just 13GB of space, a custom domain, customisation and email. Basic stuff. In truth, you can get a lot more for that kind of money by investing in a ‘self hosting’ package with a web hosting company, which then means a LOT more goodies; custom themes, plugins, add-ons etc.
I will be honest, I was VERY disappointed. Having been an ardent supporter of WordPress for many years, I felt as if a good friend had turned on me and got greedy.
So, WordPress.com, I have turned off auto-renew for all of the blogs I currently manage. You will get no more money from me.
