Focus: Favourite Blogs

Lemon Freckles

Just so you know, I am actually drawing and working, which is why I am not blogging as much. I am also spending time with my family, writing, working on Artjunky.net and doing lots of reading. One of the things I love doing though, is reading blogs. So here is a quick roundup of a small selection of my current fave blogs which include both lifestyle and design. More to come…. Emma Gannon: Girl Lost in the City: Emma Gannon is a journalist and lifestyle blogger. Emma covers everything from fashion, books, culture, magazines and anything else that appeals to her. Her writing is informative, friendly and engaging, always a good read.

Identity + Change + Decisions

28/07/2013

Over ten years ago, when I had been learning about web design and had been running a forum for a couple of years, I decided to build my own websites. I registered two domains, illusio.net and illusiocreative.co.uk. The first, illusio.net was to be my hobby domain for my writing and art, and the latter for web design. I chose a user/brand name because the culture of the web was different back then. It was more common for people to use nicknames, as anonymity was encouraged and the use of ones own name was not favoured, for many reasons. It was mostly about guarding ones privacy. At that time, I had still not considered selling myself as an artist online or creating a portfolio. I did blog however, and had an account on Live Journal. Later on I decided not to use the illusiocreative.co.uk domain for web design and use it for my art instead. Continuing with the brand name, Illusio Creative still seemed a good idea at the time. However, in the last year or so, I have come to the conclusion that this is maybe not the best way for me to move forward in terms of marketing myself as an artist/illustrator. I have noticed that very few artists and illustrators use branding, and most use their own names. I don’t feel comfortable with it any more, and in fact a couple of years ago, I did register a domain with my own name.

Featuring Artists and Creatives

26/02/2012

For quite a while now as you all know, I have been doing my Artists Feature Friday blog post, and basically just posting nice images of other artists work from my Flickr list. That’s all very well, but leaves me rather dissatisfied. I have come to the conclusion that there is too little support for emerging artists, and those who do not have a ‘name’.  There are some great art & design mags out there, but very few that feature artists that are not already established and/or commercially successful. Now, I get it. They need to make a buck, and that’s fine, but is an unsatisfactory state of affairs. It also smacks somewhat of elitism and snobbery, of which the art world is rife as it is. So, I have decided to start featuring artists, designers, photographers etc, that will include an interview and selection of work.

Upper Case Mag - Worklife II

Weeks ago I received my much anticipated copy of Worklife 2, produced by Uppercase Magazine in Canada. I have been meaning to post about it for weeks, and have finally gotten around to it.
