The Art of Sandra Hultsved

12/02/2014

Amanita virosa

In a recent call for ‘featured artists’, one artist who responded stood out immediately. Sandra Hultsved, a self taught illustrator, with a unique and dark style that I found appealing. Her work has a gothic theme running throughout, which could be bleak, but isn’t, as the drawings are skillfully executed, and whilst dark, retain a certain whimsical quality. Some of her drawings were reminiscent to me of the original illustrations featured in the works by Edgar Allan Poe. One drawing in particular, called ‘The Bride’, bought to mind an opera by Donizetti called, ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ based on the book by Sir Walter Scott. Needless to say, her drawings have that kind of evocative feel, which is a unique gift, as it is not often for me, when viewing an illustration, that it engenders an immediate literacy association. I asked her to tell us a bit about herself.

Images from the past…

Car Park Tree

When I was putting together my slide show recently, I took some shots of an old sketchbook which contained work from the 90s. Mostly ink drawings and some pieces which had had to be pasted in from an even earlier sketchbook which fell apart. On review of older work recently, I was saddened at how little there is left. Hardly any of my college and University remains apart from a very few drawings, as my Grandmother threw everything away when she started to go senile because she needed the ‘space’. Very little is left from the 90s as I moved around a lot when I was living in London and when I first moved down to the coast. So, here is a small selection from one of my 90’s sketchbooks, thought they might be interesting to…well, someone!

A Collection Past and Present

I wasn’t able to include as much old work as I wanted, so it’s more ‘present’ that ‘past’. I may redo this at some point. Anyway, it was fun, hope you like it…
