Birthday Round Up: Books and Boots

27/04/2014

Plants and Places by Angie Lewin

It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago (seems to roll around very quickly these days). In terms of celebrating we kept it pretty low key as we have a lot going on all of us. I had already been treated to my new phone (the fabulous Samsung Galaxy Note3)  by my Luke, BUT I also got a new pair of Dr Martens (they are gorgeous), and a couple of books, one of which I bought myself and one bought by Luke. However, it’s not often I spend money on myself, and really only happens on my birthday. These days the majority of my money is spent on my daughter (naturally). Check out my boots, aren’t they awesome!

UK Handmade Autumn Issue 2012

Autumn Issue 2012

Today sees the release of the fabulous Autumn issue of UK Handmade 2012. Arguably one of the best so far, and packed to the seams (no pun intended) with amazing articles, features, interviews, tutorials, recipes, business advice and much more.  UK Handmade featuring the best of UK designers, artists and artisans has been going since 2008,  and has generated a huge following, putting itself at the front of the UK handmade movement. On August 10th to support and promote the Buy Handmade Campaign, UK Handmade is launching an awesome COMPETITION where two lucky winners can win themselves £150 worth of handmade bespoke designer jewellery. But, sadly this will be the last issue for former Editor and talented jewellery maker Anna Stassen, as she and her hubby are leaving the UK to live in Australia. Anna has been with UK Handmade since it’s inception four years ago.  Her contribution to UK Handmade has been invaluable as Editor and Director. Her drive, enthusiasm and vision has been instrumental in making UK Handmade the success it is today. Read the article about Anna and what she has done for UK Handmade here. The talented designer/maker and deputy Editor Bebe Bradley is taking over as Editor full time.  Bebe has also been with UK Handmade since it began, and has been responsible for many of the magazine’s fantastic lifestyle articles and lovely photography. Her contribution has also helped to shape the look and identity of UK Handmade. So, I wish Anna a fond farewell in her new adventures, and welcome Bebe as Editor. Do enjoy the magazine, and don’t forget to check out that COMPETITION.

Inspire: Mariano Fortuny

Evening Coat by Mariano Fortuny

As a young student whilst midway through the final year of my Diploma in Art & Design (completed prior to going to Uni), one of my tutors (Tony Southall) introduced me to an artist and designer of the 1900s’ called Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) . Now, Tony was specifically showing me the couture of Fortuny and his signature piece, the ‘Delphos’ dress as my dissertation included Greek Mythology and design, and he thought I would be interested.

Spoonflower fabrics II

A few days ago some more swatches arrived from Spoonflower. All have printed well so all four are now available to purchase from my own Spoonflower Shop. Also, I was very happy to discover that one of my ‘Sea Theme’ prints from the last batch has already been purchased.

Spoonflower Fabrics

A few days ago I got my swatches from Spoonflower for some designs I wanted to make available to sale. I am quite pleased, apart from one not featured here (colours not right ) they have turned out quite well. Now, these illustrations were not originallyy created as textile designs, I just uploaded them as I wanted to see how they would look. But, I will be working on some designs soon specifically for fabric. Luke’s favourite is the top left design ‘Sea Inspired II’,  he states he wants a shirt made from this fabric.  So, here they are.
